Master Eating Out

My goal with this post is to help those of you who are struggling with eating out. I know how it is... You do so well during the week (eating healthy, working out everyday, not having a single cheat meal),  then all of a sudden the weekend rolls around and the old habits come back. From personal experience, it's not always easy ordering just a salad when your friends are ordering fettuccine alfredo or a burrito drenched in queso. Healthy IS easy, and it's mastered once you learn to LOVE it. So here a a few options to look for when you have no choice but to meet your friend at that Mexican restaurant.

1. No FRIED!

We all love a good fish tempura in our sushi but this is one of the easiest things to avoid when eating out because it isn't tricky! It's simple, no fried.

2. Say no to extra cheese...

You know at Olive Gardens how they ask if you want cheese on absolutely everything they bring to the table? Yeah, say no to that please. As if there isn't enough cheese in everything already. Another tip would be just avoiding foods that have all that extra cheese. This means no alfredo dipping sauce, no queso dip, and no cheese on your sub. All that fat is unnecessary and unhealthy! This does not mean you should completely stay away from cheese but few restaurants offer LOW-FAT or SKIM cheese.

3. Stay away from extra Condiments and Creamy Salad Dressings (a lot of good stuff, I know)

I personally love the avocado ranch dressing from Chick-Fil-A, but I am well aware of how terrible it is for me. Ranch, Mayonnaise, all that stuff you add for more FLAVOR is just extra CALORIES. It's terrible for you and your body. Mayo is almost completely made of egg yolks, and 62% of your recommended daily intake of cholesterol comes from one medium sized egg. So in order to fully enjoy that mayo, there's no choice but to clog your arteries (I love how I threw that in so lightly). Basically, stay away from those creamy bases and stick to oil, vinegar, lemon, or mustard!

4. Skip the Bread Basket.

We aren't always lucky enough to eat out with someone who is willing to give up bread like you and I, but if you happen to be, tell your waiter to completely skip bringing it out. If you are faced with the challenge of having to stare at it the whole meal, keep in mind that refined white bread is not good for you. You are not getting the nutrients you would from whole grain bread. White bread is made by stripping the the germ and rye from wheat which is eventually made into a flour and then bleached. This also includes not eating pasta, or white rice (unless it's whole wheat)!

Now that you have a few things you should stay away from, here are your healthier options:

1. GRILLED!

These days lots of restaurants are becoming aware of individuals healthy eating and grilled options are available almost everywhere. So stick to GRILLED, LEAN meats (chicken, turkey, my personal favorite FISH).

2. Can't go wrong with a Nutrient Dense SALAD!

Stick to salad as your side (with an oil and vinegar dressing, of course).  No need for butter drenched potatoes...

3. Find any WHOLE GRAIN options.

I've been to plenty restaurants with whole grain buns, bread or wraps. Ask for your sushi to be made with brown rice instead of white! Look out for these healthier options.

4. Be aware of a HEALTHY serving size!

Eat half and take the rest home! Most serving size's at restaurants are double, sometimes TRIPLE of what you should normally be eating in one meal. Here's a picture to help you visulive how much you should be eating. Oh, please don't pick up your chicken at a restaurant with your friends to make sure it fits in your palm...

5. Always order WATER!!!

I'm in love with water. And why shouldn't I be? Our body is almost entirely made up of water so shouldn't we constantly work on getting it back to it's natural state? Ordering water not only saves you money (average drink is about $2.50, am I right?), it also saves you from consuming EMPTY calories and who on earth has room for that?!

And that my friends is the best way to stay on track!
